IE/Network Browse Not responding head-scratcher
« on: October 02, 2007, 04:30:36 PM »
Hello all.

I've got a user who is having a strange problem with ie7.  Here's the problem & details:

As soon as you open IE, it hangs (“Not Responding”), if you leave it for 30seconds it kicks back to life. But if you type another address -> hangs for 30sec then fine etc.  Similarly, when you browse for a file on the network.  It took 40 seconds to open a tiny text file.

  • Still same under my admin account
  • Full virus/spyware scan came up clean
  • No unusual CPU in Task Manager – “System Idle Process” stays around 98% even when IE is “Not Responding”
  • Updated to IE7 + WinXP up to date
  • Disabled all IE7 add-ins (even started IE7 in “No Add-in Mode”)
  • Tools>Internet Options>LAN Connection all as they should be
  • Under Network Adapter, removed all connections (i.e. Client for MS Networks, File and Printer Sharing, QoS Packet Scheduling) – rebooted – reinstalled.
  • But a key point could be this.  Internet/LAN browsing is fine in Firefox! So I’m thinking it must be a windows/internet explorer component or setting.

Run a chkdsk.

Oooh, i thought that could of been it. It did pick up some errors but did not fix it. Dang.
Any last ideas before I rebuild it?

Please! :(
