Labs?
« on: September 09, 2009, 07:34:43 PM »
Hi chaps.  I have a decent photo printer, which is great for knocking out one's and two's but if I want to print many more pics (eg following a holiday) or big enlargements I guess it would be better to get a lab to do it...  any suggestions and how does it work, eg if I upload a pic to them will the file size not be reduced? Or do you send a stick?

Thanks
T

Also.... If I wanted to keep good quality pics online so family and friends could see them, does anyone have a suggestion as to a host... thinking of Mac MobileMe...  I have put a few pics on Facebook but they have shrunk them down and you cannot properly see the exquisite quality of the works  ;D

I use and recommend photobox.co.uk. You can also use them for sharing photos with others (who can then optionally order their own prints).

Photos should be in sRGB, but remember to convert if you use a different colourspace (if you don't know what  that means don't worry about it - it's a fairly safe bet you're using sRGB already).

Actually, does anyone know of labs that can core with anything other than sRGB?

Default highest quality setting from Nikon D60, uploaded and edited on iPhoto....

I used to be pretty expert in film photography, developing etc., and I believe I have a good eye and my photos are very good (IMHO), but I know zilch really about digital... maybe I should do a course, or can someone recommend a good book?

One of the things I have not got to grips with is controlling the depth of field with my D60...  With film I would always control aperture size to manage DoF.... but I have yet to spend the time needed to learn this control on the D60... this has led to many pics that are not what I intended.... :(

Sounds like you want a bit of this:

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall, torque is how far you take the wall with you.

Unless it is something extra special, I tend to use my local ASDA to print my pictures.  They do most things in an hour (or five minutes if they're not busy) and their prices are very keen - 6x4"=15p, 7x5"=25p, 9x6"=30p and 10x8"=£1.20 and their poster sizes are good, too.  Some of these prices are even cheaper if you are prepared to wait a couple of days, or have lots to be printed.

In my local ASDA, they are very knowledgeable about their kit and one chap in particular is a keen photographer, who will often discuss my photos for me.
