Stop Messenger Pop-Up Spam by @ 11:46 am
Newsbytes reported some weeks ago about how a company called DirectAdvertiser was using a flaw in Microsofts Messenger to spam you with pop-ups. Now you can do something to stop these pesky pop-ups.
Thanks to theregister for their report on this, it seems that DirectAdvertiser has found a re-seller called 3032.com.
The origin of these pop-up (as previously reported) is untraceable and no laws apply (as yet) to this kind of ad spamming so it is totally legal for companies to use this method. However, If these pop-ups spoil your surfing pleasure you can stop these pesky pop-ups in their tracks. You now a few options with which you can stop them. Firstly, If your running Windows XP and your not using a software firewall like ZoneAlarm or Sygate, then turn on the built in firewall in Windows XP. Right click a connection in 'show all connections' and go to the advanced tab. Just tick the box to turn the firewall on. Microsoft are aware of this ads problem and give the following advice CLICK HERE
A website called stopmessengerspam.com offers a free tool that will remove the messenger service from your PC. It's ideal for users with little knowledge of messenger with it's one click fix. If you would rather remove messenger yourself then the site also offers help to do that for all operating systems. CLICK HERE to visit stopmessengerspam.com. If you would like to read the full report that was posted on theregister then CLICK HERE
Finally I would like to stress that we are not talking about MSN instant messenger, that is a totally different program.

Nvida GeForce FX image kits available by @ 1:19 am
Nvidis have just uploaded a selection of 2D and 3D logos for the GeForce FX card on their webspace. Also a zip file called board chip is available. Each folder has a pdf file with details on how the logos are best used.
I've taken a look at the two smaller folders which have hi-res and low-res logos but I've not yet downloaded the large board chip zip which I imagine must have some close up pictures of the GeForce FX
If you wish to download them and take a look, you can see the folders HERE

The image above is a slightly reduced version from the high res zip file.

United Devices to fight bioterrorism by @ 8:08 pm
In an newsletter today from United Devices, they said they will be launching a new internet based research project using the LigandFit application to screen approximately 35 million potential drug molecules against several virus structures that could be used for bioterrorism.
Many thanks to Tony for sending this one in to Newsbytes.
Next week we will launch a new Internet-based research project using the LigandFit application to screen approximately 35 million potential drug molecules against several virus structures that could be used for bioterrorism.
This project will run in parallel to the Cancer Research Project as a secondary task. If you do not wish to participate in this project, please go to the device management section of your member home page and select the device profile you are using. Near the bottom of the device profile you will find the project selections. De-select the secondary task (virus research project) and save your changes. Any device using that device profile will not be sent work for the new project.
It should be noted that screening these virus structures will also generate new leads for anti-cancer drugs. Also, the funding for the project ensures the continuance of the highly successful Cancer Research Project. Many organizations have contributed to this new project, and we look forward to providing more detail with next week's launch.
With news reports of a war around the corner, the results from this project might be very important.

AquaMark 3 due shortly by @ 7:43 pm
Development of AquaMark 3 is progressing well, so we are glad to be able to announce its release for Q1 of this year. AquaMark 3 is the follow-up of the AquaMark 2.3 which had so far only be available for professional usage.
Massive, the makers of AquaMark has told Newsbytes today that version 3 of this benchmarking tool will be available in the next few months. AquaMark 3 will be a fully DirectX 9-capable cutting-edge benchmark based on our krass™ engine which also powers AquaNox 2: Revelation. The AquaMark 3 benchmark allows users to observe the new graphical techniques made possible by DirectX 9 and determine the performance of these features in a real world application.
Contrary to its predecessor the AquaMark 3 will be available for public download.
I was one of the lucky few to be able to use and test out the original AquaMark 2 and it was a stunner. If AquaMark 3 is half as good again and is available to the general public, I'm sure it will become one of the worlds favourite benchmarking tools.

Beware of Xupiter toolbar by @ 7:25 pm
We all know about installers like Gator, Comet Cursor and Bonzi Buddy (to name but a few), well we now report on the claims that Xupiter toolbar installs itself on your computer if you have your security settings set to default.
Many claim that the Xupiter toolbar auto installs on your system if you have your seurity settings set to default in Internet Explorer.
Although Xupiter is not a virus, it seems to act like one. Once installed, it can also be a nightmare trying to get shot of it. It seems (allegidly) that if you leave even the slightest bit of the program hanging around it will auto-install again.
It is claimed that the program will try to install updates everytime you boot up your PC.
Some people claim that they get random words and characters all over there screens once Xupiter has got a hold.
According to Wired News today, Xupiter has issued an uninstall utility but "but many said that it didn't work, and in some cases made things worse."
Slashdot said today "once on your system, it's gracious enough to reset your homepage to xupiter.com, forward all your searches to their search engine, download and automatically launch applications (like gambling applets), and blocks all attempts to set these back to normal"
However, all is not lost. Many reports say that Spybot: Search and Destroy seems to be able to remove the nasty and all it's components.
Our advice then must be to raise your security levels within Internet Explorer and make sure you have an up to date spyware removal tool.

Missing Windows Media Player 7.1 Patch by @ 8:26 am
Yesterday, many sites informed us that a patch is available to fix 3 vulnerabilities in Windows Media Player 7.1. Microsoft seems to have removed the patch from it's download site now.
The patch was claimed to have fixed a Cache Disclosure vulnerability, a Privilege Elevation vulnerability through Windows Media Device Manager Service and a Media Playback Script Invocation vulnerability.
The link sites around the world used to point us in the right direction was THIS ONE. As you can see, you get a 'The download you requested is unavailable' message. Doing a search for the patch finds no results.
Having said this, I would have thought the majority of users would have moved up to WMP9 by now.
We will keep you posted. If you find this patch anywhere on the Microsoft site, let us know!

Antivirus Software review: GAV (Updated) by @ 1:03 pm
Newsbytes reported on a new antivirus software called Gladiator earlier today. We take a look at this Alpha build. Be warned, you could be splitting your sides with this antivirus.
Firstly, this is a review of the software, not a test. Please keep that in mind, we have not tested it with any viruses or trojans. As always, Newsbytes likes to try things out on your behalf and give you a little review.
First Impressions We downloaded Gladiator Antivirus (GAV) from their Website. It was a small download at 3.41mb. The FAQ on the website said it was compatable with all other AV software and told us not to uninstall the antivirus software that you already had installed.
After a quick and painless install we were greeted by the splash screen and a voice which said "Initalising scan engines and decrunch plug-ins". A helmet pops up in the toolbar. On right clicking the helmet you are presented with the options screen.
 Gladiator - Toolbar Menu pop-up
As with all antivirus, we thought that we had better go online and make sure we have the latest virus list, so we pressed the 'Live Update' tab. We were then presented with this screen.
 Gladiator - Realtime Update Screen
You cannot check for updates until you have registered. You type your name and email address in the spaces provided and press 'Register Now'. I instantly checked my email and there was the registration code. You pop it into the panel and away you go. It reported that we already had the latest files. So, on with a scan. We thought we would try a full scan of the system.
Now the fun begins We were presented with the main part of this program, the scanner interface. It's green, full of moving lines and a radar which was ready to spin when you press start. The panel appeared on screen to beeping sounds and a sound that can only be described like an elevator from a StarTrek movie.
Gladiator - Main Scanner interface Panel
Oh dear, I then pressed scan. The tears were pouring down my face, I almost wet myself with laughter as the scanner started it's scan. Why? you may ask, The programmer has used his own voice to repeatedly tell you what mode the scanner was using to scan. Every few seconds it shouted at you TURBO followed by DeCrunching. I cannot describe in words how funny the voice is, but after about 3 minutes and only a few files checked I noticed that every time the voice would sound, the scanner paused for a millisecond. After fits of giggles by all, I stopped the scan.
Off I went to the toolbar menu to shut off all sounds. Restarted the scanner to find that it had made no difference at all. Back to the Toolbar menu again and on clicking the advanced configuration tab, I was finally able to untick selected sounds and restarted the scan.
The scan takes forever, but according to the website, it scans much deeper than any other antivirus scanner hense it will take longer.
After finishing the scan you are presented with a very good screen telling you all sorts of warnings, information and details about what the scanner has found. It didn't find any viruses but showed that many files had been patched (which I knew about).
To Sum Up GAV is far from a professional antivirus software at this time in it's development, it's more gear towards spotty faced game playing kids than adults with it's strange array of sounds and jazzy space aged interface. It is as far as we can see a very good antivirus scanner. However, it is let down by an over fancy interface panel and the numerous sounds. No doubt, the sounds will all be changed before a final version is released (I hope).
Would I recommend it to you to use? Yes, if only to give you the biggest laugh you ever had. It doesn't start up with Windows, it only runs when you want it to. It's very happy to work with any other antivirus software that you have on your system. It is another tool in the fight against viruses and if the scan engine is half as good as the program makers say it is then it's a harmless enough program to have alongside your main antivirus software.
Go on... Give it a try:-)
One bit of advice, I would recommend that you change it's default setting in the advanced config panel regarding what to do when it finds a virus. I would tick 'Ask me what to do. rather than automatically try to repair. Just in case and keep a back-up of your system too. Although it found nothing on my system I am unaware of what the program will do if it found a virus or picked up on a faulse file detection.
Updated on 28 January 2003 19.20hrs) The maker of GAV has contacted Newsbytes and have forwarded the following information.
"GAV is very strong in Backdoor and Trojan Detection"
He also tells use that Trojan Hunter also uses parts of the GAV scan engine.
I would just like to add that although I found the sounds used as default in GAV highly amusing, they can be turned off in the advanced settings tab. My article was a review and not a test of it's abilities as stated above. I'm sure GAV is every bit as good as all the tests show.

Gladiator AntiVirus GAV Alpha by @ 9:51 am
Gladiator AntiVirus GAV is a professional virus and trojan scanner. GAV is designed to detect and identify much more than your average free antivirus software.
Gladiator is a new kid on the block. This new antivirus software is far more powerful than any other free antivirus software. Gladiator's GAV will detect and identify the following known virus types:
BAT-Viruses HLLx-Viruses I-Worms IRC-Worms mIRC-Worms IIS-Worms Trojans Trojan-Notifier Trojan-Dropper Trojan-Downloaders Backdoors Unix Trojans/Backdoors VBS Viruses/Backdoors General Office Macro Viruses Word Macro Viruses Excel Macro Viruses within files boot-sectors main-boot-records partition-tables and memory.
Gladiator says: Gladiator AntiVirus does detect and unpack also runtime packed trojans/worms/backdoors like UPX or PECompact compressed malware. This is a important point and most of the commercial scanners dont have this feature, so GAV is ideal as 2nd On-Demand Scanner to protect the PC from packed/patched malware which other scanners dont find.
There is only one snag to all this. A little note at the bottom of their main page says: Note: GAV IS STILL IN ALPHA PHASE OF DEVELOPMENT! So only try it out if you know what your doing and are prepared to take the risk.
It still looks a very promising antivirus software and we will be keeping an eye on it's development.

Skin flints corner - A selection of freeware by @ 10:52 pm
Here at Newsbytes, we often rant on about how you should use antivirus software, spyware removal tools and firewalls to name but a few. Well, I thought it was about time to give you the rundown of some of the best freeware programs available. Yes, you heard that right, freeware. You don't have to spend a penny with this little lot.
First and foremost, proberbly the most important tool of all, antivirus software. Yes, you can spend mega-bucks on antivirus software from the big boys, but you don't have to. So you have no excuses for catching a virus now do you.
A number of freeware antivirus packages are available, one of my favourite is AVG from Grisoft. It's small, it's easy to understand and it doesn't slow your system down. An alternative is Avast which is a little more complex to use but has a neat radio style interface.
Then we come to the firewall. Users of Windows XP have a built in firewall and if your not using any form of software firewall, I suggest that you make sure it's switched on by going to 'network connections', selecting the advanced tab and ticking the firewall box.
However, the built in firewall of Windows XP only works one way, it blocks incoming traffic. If you ever got a virus then it could spread itself to the outside world without your knowledge. That's why I would suggest a software firewall that works in both directions. Again, there are a number of free versions but two of the best are ZoneAlarm and Sygate. Both are easy to install and set up.
Now we turn to Spyware removal. Spyware are little programs/code that often gets installed on your computer without you knowing when you visit sites or install software like P2P or screensavers. They sit there often reporting back little snippets of information about your habits. To blast these pesky things from your computer you need a spyware removal tool. Yet again, a number of freeware programs are available and at this time of writing I would recommend Spybot: Search & Destroy. It's regularly updated to include all the latest nasties.
Now one program that has warned me about a potential virus before any other is Mailwasher. Mailwasher sits between you and your email server and can let you look at the emails sitting there before you download them. The main point about Mailwasher is that it can filter out SPAM (unwanted junk mail) and it gives you the choice to delete the email or you can also try to bounce the email back at whoever sent it, making them think your email address doesn't exist (this function doesn't work will all SPAM). Mailwasher, although free will show a scrolling banner until you pay towards it's development. All that Mailwasher asks is for a tip.
OK, now you are protected from the elements, lets look at some other freeware stuff you might find handy.
WCPUID (funny name I know) is a little tool for telling you everything you want to know about your system and how it's set up. It shows system info, device lists, chipset info, cache info, standard and extended feature flags and much more.
Microsoft also offer a number of free tools called PowerTools to enable you to do all sorts of tweaks and tricks with your system. TweakUI is properly the most handy one. You can brose all the PowerTools on the Microsoft site HERE
So that's the software. Everyone free for the home single PC user.
Next time on Skin Flints corner we will look at a selection of useful websites who offer web based services to keep your PC running in tip top condition. Yet again, everyone will be free. If your a developer and offer a freeware program or tool, why not drop us a line and we might just feature it on our pages.

Lavasoft's Ad-Aware 6 to be released by @ 9:50 pm
Lavasoft, the company who abandoned support for it's Ad-Aware spyware removal tool last September leaving 1000s of freeware users with an out-dated product have relaunched themselves with a new sleek website and a new version of Ad-Aware. But will it be enough to convince it's previous loyal users to come back and trust them again when alternative spyware removal tools like Spybot: Search & Destroy have proved themselves to be more than capable at doing the job. Also, new technologies that work more like antivirus software constantly monitoring your system are being made available and increasing in poularity.
Ad-Aware 6 will come in 3 flavours. A Professional Edition at a $39.95, a Plus Edition at $26.95 and a standard Edition which will remain free.
The new website boasts PC Worlds support as Ad-Aware was voted their best freeware program of 2002.
It was reported that the previous version of Ad-Aware had problems when a bogus version contained a virus which infected users PCs. It is noted that Lavasoft don't host the file themselves but use a number of third party sites to distribute their program. Although this is common practice when dealing with such a large number of downloads, but Lavasoft have made it clear that the downloads are available from MajorGeeks, PC-World, C-Net, Cheetaa, Wyvernworks and Winsite.
Well, the download will not be available until February, but when it is, the new version of Ad-Aware, Ad-Aware 6 has got much mending to do if it's ever going to keep it's crown.
The proof, yet again will be in the pudding and I hope that Lavasoft don't decide to abandon this version when it becomes out of date.

Another method to combat spyware by @ 3:15 pm
Spyware Blaster provides another method to combat spyware. It doesn't scan and clean for spyware, it prevents it from ever being installed in the first place.
Spyware Blaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.
How? By setting a kill bit for the CLSIDs of spyware ActiveX controls, it prevents the installation of any of them from a webpage. You can run Internet Explorer with Active-X enabled, but you will never even get a Yes/No box popped up, asking you to install a spyware Active-X control (Internet Explorer will never download or run it!). All other Active-X controls or plug-ins will work fine.
The SpywareBlaster database contains information on these known spyware Active-X controls. Make sure you run the Check For Updates feature frequently to get the latest database! (And make sure you check the new items to protect your system against them!)
As a side benefit, setting this kill bit will also prevent the spyware Active-X from running, in many cases, if it is already installed on your system.
They don't have a dedicated website, but you can use their forums to get any help or advice that you may need.
You can download Splyware Blaster HERE
You can also download it from Major Geek
As always with this type of program, use it at your own risk!!

Ink-jet printing by bluetracker @ 2:08 pm
Desktop printing reaches new heights
Feeling 'liverish'? Or perhaps you are unfortunate enough to require an organ transplant? Well fear not. If early trials are anything to go by then, soon and with the aid of a 'modified' inkjet printer, scientists will soon be able to print out organs on demand.
This incredible but nonetheless true discovery is of course still in it's infancy. Up until now only Hamster's ovary cells have been the result of this revolutionary use of a computer peripheral sat on your desk and often taken for granted.
How is it done? Well in this month's edition of The New Scientist we are informed that, by substituting ink for complex supensions of cells enclosed in a 'bio jelly' it has been possible to create tubes of living tissue. The software once responsible for printing out pictures of Aunty Dot has of course been modified; now it controls viscosity, electrical resistances and temperature of the cells instead of ink, the feed system or 'print heads of course have also been modified to deal with the new 'inks'. Like printing with different colours, placing different types of cells in the ink cartridges should make it possible to recreate complex structures consisting of multiple cell types. Leading tissue engineer Anthony Atala of Harvard Medical School in Boston said "I think this is extremely exciting technology that has the potential to overcome some of the major obstacles [to tissue engineering] we have seen in the past," .
Printing is not the only promising new technique for creating entire organs. It might one day be possible to grow them in situ. In December, scientists in Israel reported that they had managed to grow miniature but fully functional kidneys by implanting foetal pig or human cells into immunodeficient mice.
But growing organs from scratch will take much longer than printing them, Mironov says. "Patients don't always have the luxury to wait."
The full story can be found by visiting The New Scientist

Massive outage is cause for concern - Page Updated 25/1/03 23.51pm by @ 2:24 pm
You may have noticed that 100's of websites seem to be unavailable. An SQL worm is rumoured to have hit AT&T routers, backbones and servers. Details are sketchy at the moment but early reports are that 3/4s of AT&T servers are down.
Warp2Search have posted on their news site: It seems that a real LOAD of websites is unavailable at the time of this writing. This outage includes: www.artofgregmartin.com, www.neowin.net, www.okaysoft.de, www.netshelter.net, www.avault.com, www.ve3d.com, www.internettrafficreport.com, www.tech-critic.com, www.littlewhitedog.com, www.overclockers.com, www.theinquirer.net, www.tech-report.com, www.viaarena.com, www.winbeta.org, www.windowplanet.net, and other major websites.
Rumour has it that this offline frenzy is related to AT&T routers/backbones/servers. We will keep you informed.
We will keep you informed of the situation as more details come in, we have no solid confirmation from anyone yet.
Tech-Critic has said that 3/4 of the AT&T servers went down, and has caused a major amount of sites to go offline.
You can follow the story at Warp2Search and Tech-Critic.
You can see the state of play HERE and HERE from these stat sites.
Things do look as though they have improved over the last hour or so but if we hear what the cause was/is, you'll be the first to know.
UPDATED INFORMATION The SQL worm attack began on Friday. Servers affected have not installed the latest patch from Microsoft as decribed on this page. Cert/CC. Bulletin.
Symantec has updated it's information today regarding the worm.
Symantec says: W32.SQLExp.Worm is a worm that targets servers running Microsoft SQL. The worm sends 376 bytes to 1434/udp - the SQL Server Resolution Service Port. Beginning at 5:31am GMT, we started to see a significant increase in the unique number of source IPs scanning for 1434/udp. Symantec Security Response highly recommends all MS-SQL server system administrators to audit their machines for known security vulnerabilities immediately.
Symantec Security Response also recommends configuring perimeter devices to block 1434/udp traffic from untrusted hosts.
Symantec Security Response is currently developing a removal tool for W32.SQLExp.Worm. Because the worm is only resident in memory, and is not written to disk, this threat is not detectable using virus definitions. Customers are recommended to follow the measures described above in order to deal with this threat.
The worm has the unintended payload of performing a Denial of Service due to the large number of packets it sends out.
Other names for the worm are: SQL Slammer Worm [ISS], DDOS.SQLP1434.A [Trend], W32/SQLSlammer [McAfee]
When W32.SQLExp.Worm compromises a machine it does the following:
Uses the Windows API Function, GetTickCount, to generate a random IP address to which to send the malicious packet.
Repeatedly sends itself to all IP addresses generated on UDP port 1434 from an ephemeral source port.
W32.SQLExp will continuously send packets to different IP addresses, effectively performing a Denial Of Service.
For full details of this worm visit the Symantec Website
More information Trend Micro has released the following newsletter to it's customers. The information may be useful to some users who have the worm.
Subject: Trend Micro High Risk Virus Alert - WORM_SQLP1434.A
WORM_SQLP1434.A attacks targets systems using Microsoft SQL Server 2000, allowing affected SQL Servers to send the malicious packet to other SQL Servers and thereby causing a slowdown, or even failure, in the affected network.
The code that executes the denial-of-service attack resides only in memory of affected Microsoft SQL servers, and there are no file counterparts. Because of this, antivirus scanners that do not support memory scanning will not be able to detect the code.
There is no pattern file required.
Trend Micro strongly advises customers to download the latest fix patch supplied by Microsoft, updated on January 17, 2003. The patch is found on this site, http://www.microsoft.com/sql/downloads/2000/sp3.asp
For more information on WORM_SQLP1434.A please visit our Web site HERE

KNOPPIX can be adapted and used as a Linux demo, a training course CD, a rescue system or as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on fixed disk. Using transparent decompression, up to 2 gigabyes of executable software can be put on a CD (this CD, for instance, has 1700MB of software on it).
Since this is a genuine open source project, subject to the GNU General Public License, the source code for the KNOPPIX-specific packages is available via the Internet at http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/sources/ You may find the sources for the installed Debian packages on the various Debian mirrors. Additionally, you can order the sources directly from Knopper.Net for the cost of material, copying, packaging and postage. This offer is valid for 3 years, counting from the build date of this CD-Rom.
System Requirements Intel-compatible CPU (i486 or better), 20 MB of ram for text mode, and at least 82 MB for graphic mode with KDE. (To run various Office applications, at least 128 MB is recommended), a bootable CD-ROM/DVD drive, or alternatively, a boot floppy and a standard CD-ROM/DVD drive (IDE/ATAPI or SCSI), a standard SVGA-compatible graphics card, and a standard serial or PS/2 mouse, or IMPS/2-compatible USB Mouse.
Question: "My computer does not have that much RAM, so I can't run some of the programs on the CD (or they load very slowly). Is there a trick I can use to run KDE and the Office programs, Videos, and Games?" Yes. By use of a "swap partition" missing RAM under Linux can be replaced by an area on the fixed disk reserved for this purpose. KNOPPIX detects and automatically uses swap partitions that are already available. Only experienced users should consider creating a swap partition, however, since to create one it is necessary to re-partition the hard disk. Starting with version 1.5 of KNOPPIX a "swapfile" for Linux can also be created on an existing DOS partition (command mkdosswapfile). This allows KNOPPIX to run with less real RAM. The file created on the DOS partition (knoppix.swp) can be deleted later, if the space is needed for other things.
Where can I download other versions, or order a KNOPPIX CD? Due to the large amount of data (and the download time which can be expected), we recommend ordering KNOPPIX from various distributors, (e.g. those who also put out the LinuxTag CDs), rather than to transfer the complete current CD by WWW or ftp. At http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/ you will find some mirrors on the Internet, which, to a limited extent, provide a download area for the current KNOPPIX ISO image. You can also order a version adapted to your requirements on the Contact Form on Knopper.Net.
How do I run KNOPPIX? In order to start the CD, first adjust the boot list in the BIOS Setup of your computer to boot from CD (before the hard drive). Put the CD in and restart the computer. If your computer does not support this option, you must use a boot diskette, which you can create with the help of the boot image /KNOPPIX/boot.img available on the CD. Use the mkfloppy.bat script for the regular boot image (German version). Use the command rawrite2 -f boot-en.img -d A (in the KNOPPIX directory) to create an English boot disk.
What software is on the KNOPPIX-CD? In addition to a standard Debian based GNU/Linux distribution (www.debian.org) the following "highlights" are available on this CD:
KDE V3.x as the standard desktop, with KOffice and the Konqueror WWW browser. X Multimedia System (xmms) with MPEG video and MP3 support as well as the Ogg Vorbis Audio Player Internet-access software kppp and isdn-utilities Gnu Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) Version 1.2 Tools for data rescue and system repair Network analysis and administration tools OpenOffice(TM) 1.x, the GPL'd version of the well-known StarOffice(TM) office suite Many programming languages, development tools (kdevelop, among others), as well as libraries for software developers. Altogether, over 900 installed software packages, comprising over 2000 executable user programs, utilities, and games. Please check the internet for the overview of installed packages and the CHANGELOG with information about current changes and developments. The real version number (=build date) of your CD-Rom is shown on the boot screen at the upper right corner. Please always state this number when you have a question or comment.
Tips & Tricks There are some notes (summarized in the file Knoppix Cheatcodes) that describe options that can be passed to Knoppix to handle special situations and/or problematic hardware. Some of them require more detailed knowledge of the Linux operating system, others are simply useful extensions of the KNOPPIX autoconfiguration system. Many of the most frequently asked questions have been collected in the file KNOPPIX-FAQ-EN.txt on this CD-ROM and on the internet.
Thanks Tony.

3DMark 2003 teaser by @ 11:25 pm
FutureMark (the new name for Mad Onion) will be bringing out a new version of their popular benchmarking program 3DMark in the next few months. FutureMark have released a 20 second Windows Media Player 9 format movie teaser download.
It's a large file (5.6 MB .wmv file) for such a short movie and you will need the Windows Media codec and/or Windows Media Player 9 to watch it.
The movie shows a rendered tunnel with a drum base heart beat style sound which opens up with the message "3DMark 03 Q1/03" and the new FutureMark logo. Nothing spectacular to be honest, but maybe this implies 3DMark 2003 won't be spectacular either. Only time will tell.
With new graphics cards like the GeForce FX the new 3DMark 2003 benchmarking tool had better meet with it's new rendering powers. But you'll find nothing in their teaser clip to even hint of it's quality.
You can download the teaser from a number of mirrors from FutureMark

Nvidia 42.30 drivers leaked by @ 7:59 pm
The Guru of 3D have a new leaked version of Nvidia's Detonator drivers. This version is 42.30. These drivers seem to have an outdated readme file but apart from that, seem genuine.
They have the same version number as the Asus version leaked a few days ago. It's possible that these drivers are the same but now have the Nvidia branding and may have been hashed together hense the out of date readme file.
I have tried these drivers and found that the graphics and textures to look better than my previous 42.01s, however, the improvement gain is at the cost of fps as my 3DMark score was down by almost 350 marks. To be honest though, I often find drivers (or my system) needs a period to settle in before benchmark results give their best and to be fair, I didn't have a chance to do that.
If you would like to give these drivers a try, head over to the Guru of 3D website CLICK HERE

MSI is Nvidia launch partner by @ 5:55 am
In an updated press release from MSI we are told that MSI is the launch partner of the New Generation GeForce FX Card. The press release reveals some stunning details about the new GeForce FX cards and compares it to the previous generation's top of the range GeForce Ti cards. Prepare to be gobsmacked...
MSI is the launch partner of the coming New Generation GeForce FX Card NVIDIA unveiled their next generation GPU (graphical processing unit), the GeForce FX, on Nov. 18th during the Comdex show. The GeForce FX chip comes loaded with features, ranging from raw power to visual finesse. The GeForce FX is the first graphics chip to be manufactured with the 0.13 micron process and the first to use DDR II memory, which allows for unprecedented data rates. Preliminary specifications indicate the GeForce FX will have a core clock speed of 500 MHz, memory clock speed of 500 MHz DDR (1 GHz effective), and theoretical fill rates of 4 billion pixels per second and 16 billion anti-aliased samples per second. It also boasts programmable pixel and vertex shaders and the ability to render 128-bit color internally.
It doesn’t stop there, NVIDIA’s GeForce FX boasts an enhanced, LightSpeed Memory Architecture 3 with one of the key additions being NVIDIA’s new color compression technology. This compression is completely loss-less, meaning there is no reduction in image quality of precision. As a result, memory bandwidth is used more efficiently, especially when anti-aliasing is enabled. Speaking of anti-aliasing, GeForce FX sports two new modes, a 6XS mode for Direct3D and a new 8X mode for both OpenGL and Direct3D.
Specifications & Features of the NVIDIA GeForce FX
GPU: • .13u Manufacturing Process • 125 Million Transistors ( 2X GeForce 4) • 256-Bit GPU • Flip-Chip BGA Package with copper interconnects • 8 Pixel Per Clock (8 Pixel Pipelines) • 1 TMU Per Pipe (16 Textures per unit) • > 500MHz Core Clock (Will probably vary depending on model) • 350 Million Triangles per Second - 3x The Geometry Performance of a GF4 Ti • AGP8X (2.1GB/s bandwidth)
Memory: • Memory with >1GHz Data Rate (500MHz DDR) • 128-Bit "DDRII" Type • 128MB & 256MB Memory Capacity • 3rd. Generation Lightspeed Memory Architecture • 48GB/s Effective bandwidth through the use of compression techniques. (16GB/s actual @ 500MHz)
Other: • Full DX9 Compliance (and more) • 64-Bit Floating-Point Color • 128-Bit Floating-Point Color • 2 x 400MHz Internal RAMDACs • Long Program length for Pixel and Vertex Shading • Conditional Execution for both Pixel and Vertex • True Data-Dependant at Vertex • Unified Vertex and Pixel Shading instruction set • Unified Driver Architecture • nView 2.0 - Multi-Display Technology • Digital Vibrance Control 3.0
Here's a table comparing the previous generation's feature set of the GeForce4 Ti compared to the latest from the GeForce FX:
NVIDIA has also developed its cooling solution, dubbed FX Flow, to dissipate heat from the GPU. Using a high speed fan and a copper radiator, FX Flow draws air in from outside the case to cool the GPU, but at the cost of a PCI slot. To be able to run stable, the GeForce FX will require an external power source.

The Dawn of Cinematic Computing -- Bring cinema effects to the PC Combine all of the features above; computer users get a GPU that produces cinematic quality visuals in games. NVIDIA's CineFX engine uses specialized graphics programs called shaders to convert artistic vision into digital content.
NVIDIA used three advanced shaders to achieve a realistic look of cinematic quality artwork: • Vertex Shaders Two key vertex shaders drive her motion: a branching skeletal shader where the body mesh is driven by several different combinations of internal bones, and a blend shape shader that deforms her face based on control parameters. • Skin Shader This uses a complex combination of color maps, specular maps, and blood characteristic maps to produce very realistic skin. In addition, lighting subtleties are accomplished with a series of cube maps for diffuse specular and "highlight" skin lighting. • Wing Shader A translucent shader is used for the wings. This modifies both the reflected color off the wings as well as the amount of light passing through the wings based on viewing and light angles.

GeForce FX production quirk by @ 5:34 pm
Digitimes has reported that According to industry sources, Nvidia is said to have decided to handle all the design and production of new GeForce FX (NV30) graphics cards to ensure product stability and quality. Card makers won't get a look in where the NV30 is concerned.
They say that the more simple NV31 and NV34 chips will be handed to card makers as usual. It will only be the high end, top of the range NV30 chips that Nvidia are going to handle.
So where does this leave us? PNY and MSI have already made hints that they are going to offer some high spec cards.
What's being said here is Nvidia are going to place it's own orders for the full cards and then sell on the completed cards to card manufacturers.
The top of the range NV30's are expected to be released at the end of February according to the report.

On Windows Update tonight by @ 10:33 pm

If you have Windows XP, Microsoft have a number of goodies waiting for you on the Windows Update site. Among the updates is Windows Media Player 9, Movie Maker 2, Directshow Playback support update and a codec install package for WMP 9.
Windows Media Player 9 is the latest version of Microsoft's all singing all dancing media player. The download is 9.7mb It must be installed seperately from other updates.
A codec install pack is available which lets you have all the latest Windows media codecs or to correct problems with previously downloaded codecs.
The Directshow playback update, updates the stream buffer engine (SBE) and encryptor/decoder (EncDec) components released in Windows SP1. Microsoft says to download Directshow to playback files created in Windows XP Media Center Edition. But playback does depend on the copy protection policy associated with the file.
To get your updates use the Windows Update link with your Windows XP or you can use the Windows Update tab under tools with Internet Explorer.

NotebookPC with Dual Format DVD Recordable Drive by bluetracker @ 6:47 pm

Sony's new high-end VAIO® notebook PC allows users to burn DVDs and eliminates confusion over DVD formats.
The simple to use Click to DVD™ software and built-in DVD+/- RW drive make the VAIO PCG-GRV680 notebook a powerful tool for creating professional quality DVDs. The GRV-680's ample 16.1-inch SXGA display makes video editing less of a strain on the eyes. Complete with a spacious 60-GB hard drive it can easily accommodate large video files with room to spare. In the heart of the machine is an Intel® Pentium® 4 processor 2.60 GHz provides more than ample "oomph" under the bonnet to keep up with even the most ambitious of would-be movie makers. A Dual format DVD recordable drive allows recording and play back of the four most popular types of DVD media - DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R and DVD+RW giving them greater flexibility and compatibility with the various available DVD playback devices available.

Sony's also inncludes it's exclusive Click to DVD software to make DVD authoring as simple as a couple of mouse clicks away. By connecting a camcorder to the VAIO PC via the i.LINK® (IEEE 1394) digital interface and by hitting the "Create DVD" button, you can produce a high-quality DVD movie, complete with animated backgrounds, music and moving chapter menus.

Mark Hanson, vice president and general manager of VAIO PC marketing said, "When you are turning your home movies to DVD, the last thing you want to worry about is what kind of disk to use," Quite right too, as out of the plethora of disks available out there it has been a bone of contention previously as to which will work satisfactorily with your hardware. The question as to the Make of the media still haunts the user. What makes of disk will work on their machines? IMHO a 'coming together of minds' is needed among manufacturers to reduce the probability of the purchased disk being unusable on some types of device, and reduce to a minimum the "Lottery" for the user when purchasing a supply of CD or DV Disks.... but I'm rambling again.....
Data to DVD: Just Drag and Drop
In addition to creative endeavors, the dual format drive also supports the backup and archiving of large amounts of data, up to 4.7 GB. Packet writing capabilities allow users to write data to the disk at different times without having to reformat. The notebook comes standard with DigiOn™ and EasySystems Drag `n Drop CD+DVD software for quick and easy data transfer from hard drive to archival media.
The retail model, GRV680, will be available in the USA from March

Latest Twist to the CLIÉ Handheld unveiled by bluetracker @ 5:26 pm

The CLIE™ PEG-NZ90 handheld model is Sony's latest "flagship" entertainment device that seemingly does it all.
The newest addition announced at the CES is the very latest innovation to the family of CLIÉ handhelds. Boasting a two-megapixel digital camera with built-in flash and auto-focus capabilities plus functions such as manual exposure adjustment, digital zoom (2X), red-eye reduction and a self-timer functions that were previously most often associated with dedicated digital cameras, the CLIÉ NZ90 model also features a Wi-Fi (802.11b) communications slot and integrated Bluetooth™ wireless connectivity options as well.
A host of Sony's proven techy stuff and designs come as standard, including the high resolution colour LCD screen (320 x 480 pixels), the popular flip-and-twist LCD screen design, an integrated MP3 player, a built-in AV remote controller application, and voice recording capabilities. No wonder it is termed by Sony as the 'Flagship.'

CLIÉ NZ90 handheld features:
Megapixel Resolution - The camera is capable of capturing a photo with a maximum recorded image size of 1600 x 1200 pixels.
Lens and Flash - The lens has a focus range of 0.1 meter to infinity and is protected by a lens cover. The flash features three modes (Auto, Forced Off and Forced On) for varying lighting conditions.
LCD -- for esy edit and reveiw (with the included CLIÉ Photo Editor application) on the colour LCD screen, which is easy to view even in bright sunlight.
Movie Recording - The camera's digital still capabilities are complemented by a video recording feature that allows users to record memories on a Memory Stick® media, which can be played back on the device.
Special Scene Modes - To optimise white balance in a variety of shooting situations, users can choose from a number of scene modes: Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent, Incandescent and Custom. Users can also manually adjust colour and exposure settings.
Memory Stick media, (which is about the size of a stick of chewing gum) is utilised to record digital photos and video clips.
Connecting to a World of Possibilities
Offering expansion capabilities beyond the full list of integrated features, Sony has integrated Bluetooth connectivity on its latest handheld device, allowing users to wirelessly connect to and share the features of similarly enabled devices. You can now Wirelessly access the Internet and e-mail via compatible Bluetooth-enabled cell phones that are set up with corresponding ISP services. Also featuring an integrated communications slot that accommodates an optional PEGA-WL100 Wi-Fi (802.11b) modem card, the device is then capable of receiving information at wireless broadband speeds (maximum of 11 megabits per second). With a Wif-Fi access point and corresponding ISP, users can browse the Internet, send and receive e-mail (POP3 and SMTP), and perform HotSync® operations wirelessly with a Wi-Fi enabled PC.
Grab-and-Go Accessories
Not limited to the entertainment elements on the device itself, Sony has even redesigned the humble USB cradle. Now resembling more of an artist's easel than a docking station, the slim, foldable PEGA-UC90 HotSync/charging unit features a handy AV output jack, allowing owners to view JPEG images stored on the device via a separate monitor or TV. After deciding which of your favourite images you want to share, you can print out those files on a compatible printer via the USB connection located on the side of the cradle. Both AV and USB cables are included with the device.
For the first time on any CLIÉ handheld, the CLIÉ NZ90 model features a removable Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery pack. Each PEGA-BP500 SmartLITHIUM™ battery can operate the CLIÉ NZ90 model for approximately 10 days depending on conditions, based on average use (which Sony beleives is 30 minutes per day with backlight off). The battery also indicates remaining battery life in minute format.
No PC Nearby, No Problem
More than a collection of hardware features, the CLIÉ NZ90 handheld comes bundled with an array of applications designed for fun and productivity. Sony developed key applications such as the CLIE Viewer, CLIE Album, Movie Player and PhotoStand programs to work in concert with each other so that users can easily go from one application to another. The CLIÉ NZ90 model (we are told) is the first device of it's kind to feature Picsel Technology's viewer application, which allows user to view a wide variety of documents including Microsoft® Word, Excel, PowerPoint®, PDF and image files in their native format without conversion on the PC.
Pricing and Availability (USA of course)
The PEG-NZ90 device will be available at retailers in the USA at the end of February for about $800. At the same time, additional PEGA-UC90 cradles and PEGA-BP500 battery packs will be available for about $80 each. The PEGA-WL100 Wi-Fi modem card is currently available for about $150. Pre-orders may be placed beginning today by visiting the sonystyle.com website.

DVD Handycam® camcorders by bluetracker @ 11:18 pm

Sony's new DVD camcorders (the DCR-DVD100, DCR-DVD200 and DCR-DVD300 models) record on 3-inch, DVD-R and DVD-RW media.
The three new camcorders produce DVD recordings that play back in most current home and PC DVD players, as well as most later releases of PlayStation®2 game consoles.
These new camcorders also capture JPEG still images for viewing on either your PC or TV. The DCR-DVD100 model captures 640 x 480 images, ideally sized for sharing as e-mail attachments. DCR-DVD200 and the DCR-DVD300 models incorporate a one-megapixel imager to produce higher quality video and still image resolution (1152 x 864).
All three models are capable of storing thousands of still shots at the highest still resolution on a single 3-inch disc.(All looking similar to each other only the dvd100 is shown below)

The disc-based recording system allows for quick access to favorite scenes and pictures without the fuss of rewinding and fast-forwarding. Thumbnail images of video are created from the start of every recorded scene.
No worries about recording over irreplaceable memories either as the camcorder intuitively only records on empty areas of the disc. Discs can also be titled with customised descriptions allowing you to find exactly what you want on the disk.
Customise Video with Easy In-Camera Editing
When recording on a DVD-RW disc, there is also the option to do some simple in-camera editing. For example, if the last recorded scene didn't turn out perfectly, just erase the last video excerpt and shoot the desired scene in its place. If it's an action shot taken 'on the fly' you might have trouble convincing the subject to 'do it again' just so's you can use this function! In addition, when in VR (video recording) mode, users can design a playlist of their video clips, and rearrange the order of the scenes and images. Each camcorder has multiple quality recordings options that can extend a disc's capacity to hold up to 60 minutes of video.
Worry-Free Recording™ and Connectivity Features
Super SteadyShot® Picture Stabilization - Using motion sensors to compensate for camera shake, this Worry Free Recording feature enhances video and eliminates high frequency vibration without compromising picture quality, meaning virtually no blurred images during shaky camera situations.
InfoLithium® Battery with AccuPower™ System - All Sony Handycam camcorders indicate the remaining minutes of battery life on the LCD or viewfinder display, allowing users to keep an accurate and constant reading of remaining battery power.
USB 2.0 Interface - For users without a DVD drive in their PC, Sony's DVD camcorders have a USB 2.0 interface for uncomplicated video and still data transfer to a compatible PC (Windows® ME/2000 and later operating system) with the supplied USB cable and driver CD-ROM. And as USB 2.0 on the camcorder is backward compatible, it will work seamlessly with the popular USB 1.1 interface as well.
Super NightShot® OLux/Color Slow Shutter Recording System - This system captures video in total darkness up to 10 feet away by using an advanced infrared system. Super NightShot recording employs an automatic slow-shutter control to deliver brighter, sharper images with more detail when shooting in the dark. Or use the new color mode for recording full-color video in dim light. Colour mode helps capture true-to-life colour video of sleeping babies, birthday candles and early evening events should you feel the need.
All three models feature a Carl Zeiss® Vario-Sonnar® lens producing better true-to-life colour clarity in videos and still images Coupled with an 10X optical/120X precision digital zoom that brings the action up close.
The entry-level DCR-DVD100 model(shown above) is expected to be available for under $1,000. The DCR-DVD200 unit adds a one-megapixel imager and both models have 2.5-inch SwivelScreen™ LCD displays. (No quoted prices)
For those looking for a larger view during recording and playback, the DCR-DVD300 model steps up to a 3.5-inch SwivelScreen LCD display. All three models will be available this summer. (No quoted prices)

Consumer Electronics Show 2003 by bluetracker @ 6:06 pm
In a press release Sony have released details of their CES 2003 which begins 9th January at the Las Vegas Convention Centre.
Among many items of interest to hit the high streets this year is one many have been waiting for (and the first in a series of 'goodies' to be reported on in this column).
A viable home solution for writing DVD's.

The new model attractivly named RDR-GX7 DVD recorder can record up to 6 hours in various recording modes, whilst we are told, maintaining impressive picture and sound quality.
Compatible with popular DVD-R/-RW and DVD+R/+RW discs, the RDR-GX7 DVD recorder promises users a wider selection of recording and viewing choices. The new model also incorporates several picture improvement technologies to create enhanced DVD recordings, especially effective when transferring content from video sources such as VHS or 8mm camcorders.
Equipped with convenience features such as i.LINK® (IEEE-1394) digital interface as well as an intuitive, easy-to-use graphical user interface that allows for simple, yet powerful interoperability with compatible camcorders. It also offers easy recording and editing from broadcast programs via off-air antenna, cable, or satellite receivers.
Now the techie stuff
The new recorder features Time Based Corrector, Pre-Field Noise Reduction and Pre-video Equalizer technologies that rebalance and equalize video content before it is recorded onto a DVD, improving the original source content even before the encoding process begins. This impressive process is especially beneficial when recording from lower resolution video sources such as VHS tapes and older camcorder media formats.
During the encoding process, video content is analyzed for last minute corrections to ensure precise output and high quality video reproduction. Features such as variable bit-rate MPEG encoding ensure maximum efficiency and recording time for all types of DVD media.
In the output phase, the RDR-GX7's Motion Adaptive Field Noise Reduction, Block Noise Reduction and Video Equalizer technologies combine to produce a richly textured visual rendition while minimizing picture interference caused by background artifacts or distortion.
This new recorder also incorporates proprietary DVD playback technology called Precision Cinema Progressive™, which incorporates Pixel-by-Pixel I/P Conversion technology to augment and balance DVD-video elements. Additionally, a 12bit/108MHz Video D/A Converter ensures exceptional picture quality. The RDR-GX7 DVD dual RW recorder will be available in June in the USA and it's quoted price is circa $800 (£496.94 at todays exchange rates)
More from the show as it unfolds!

Intel® XScale™ by bluetracker @ 1:52 am
In a press release today Intel® have announced that among others; Abocom, Fujitsu, Lite-On, MSI and Philips are to use Intel® XScale™ Technology Based Processors, to Power new Smart Displays
These new and upcoming products will enable wireless PC access throughout the home. Retail availability for these Smart Displays running on Intel XScale technology is expected soon from ViewSonic and Philips, with products currently targeted to be released later this year from Fujitsu and TriGem.
Smart Displays are wireless flat-panel displays that are used as monitors when docked to a base desktop PC, but when detached, become a mobile monitor using 802.11b wireless LAN technology to access information and applications from the desktop PC from anywhere in the home.
The devices are based on Microsoft Windows technology and work with your home PC operating on Windows XP Professional with service pack 1
Michael Iannitti, director, Intel Extended Computing Division, is quoted as saying "Intel XScale technology based processors provide the high-performance needed for Smart Display devices to access applications and data from the base PC," He goes on to say, "The XScale application processor is specifically designed for low-power consumption to help enable long battery life for these devices."
Additionally, we are informed, Intel provides a Smart Display reference design optimised for Intel XScale technology based processors that enables O.E.M. and Original Device Manufacturers to quickly deliver class-leading products. As part of these reference designs, Intel provides many of the necessary elements, including Intel StrataFlash® memory and Intel wireless LAN technologies to help OEM design teams create innovative Smart Display devices.
"The Philips DesXcape detachable monitor has benefited from Intel's highly scalable platform, including the high-performance, low-power Intel XScale technology based processor," said Alex Lee, general manager, Smart Displays, Philips Consumer Electronics. "The Intel platform has enabled us to bring the DesXcape detachable monitor, a high quality Smart Display, quickly to market."
It would seem that it is now fast becoming a case of "Have Monitor will travel" and the days of being tied to a computer workstation at home are now numbered. Whether this new tech will prove a hit with the home market, given there are laptops and notebooks already firmly entrenched in the market remains to be seen. It is however; I suppose a handy thing to have if you're 'caught short' in the middle of a game of "Quake".

A new breed of virus attack for 2003? by @ 11:14 pm
Security experts are warning of a new breed of virus attack. The danger with this new form of virus is it's speed. Unlike conventional attacks which take hours to spread, this new form of virus could knock out millions of computers in less than a minute.
A number of new technics could be used. One of them is named warhole worm which could create a huge outbreak in about 15 minutes. Another is a flash worm which could do the same damage in a matter of seconds.
According to a report on MSN it says that the year 2002 was a quiet year as attacks go, but this might just be the calm before the storm.
The report also goes on to say that as new anti-terrorism legislation was introduced, virus writers have homed in on special dates like September 11th and "a themed virus" had been found. Newsbytes reported on a threat by a hacker last Tuesday who said he would release a virus if Iraq is attacked. If you didn't read the story you can catch it HERE
Symantec chief researcher, Eric Chien comments in the report that most early virus attacks were script written. Like loveletter, kiddies copied them and modified them. Now we have code red and nimba which did not rely on users downloading and executing an e-mail attachment. "They use hacker exploits in combination with viruses so that they can execute on their own."
From the report, it seems that most of what has gone before, especially script written viruses are well covered by antivirus software. As for the new style viruses, alot of work needs to be done.
It's an interesting article which ends with some advice from Eric Chien which says we should all take responsible for the Internet as a whole.
