WindowsXP Service Pack 1

Microsoft is set to trial the first service pack for WindowsXP. Service Pack 1 should be avaiable for users to download in August this year. The download will be a massive 40mb and will include many new fixes. The main news about this service pack is that it will enable third party software to be installed on WindowsXP without any problems.

This is good news for people who like browsers like Netscape and Opera or users of other mail handling software. Microsoft is being forced to introduce these changes since their recent 'anti trust' law suit in the US.

So, How has Microsoft made the changes? Well, it seems that in good old Microsoft fashion it will give you the chance to set the default browser or mail handling programs. The defaults will be originally set to the Microsoft software but you have the opportunity to change it if you wish.

The software covered here is Internet Explorer 6.?, Outlook Express, Messenger, Windows Media Player and Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine. You will get 4 options to configuration XP via a new control feature. However, Microsoft says that to be included in this new feature the software must be written so that it can be registered with the new features. Just knew Microsoft wouldn't make it that easy!

Microsoft will be giving copies of the new service pack to developers to test out before giving it to users. This should iron out any security bugs first time round. Microsoft needs to change the views of the general public about XP.

However, at 40mb download, it's a large service pack. Most people will be able to obtain the upgrade via CD cover mags. And as expected, it will be free!
